These are the famous canal houses visible from Damrak in the Amsterdam Centrum, with De Oude Kerk (the old church) looming in the background.
These canal houses are a pretty iconic view in the city, as it’s not super common for the older row houses to be right on the water like this, let alone visible so unobstructed from such a distance. They’re also a very short walk down a busy street from Centraal Station, so they are among some of the first notable sights a visitor to the city might encounter as they proceed towards Dam Square.
Oude Kerk holds the distinction of being the oldest structure in the city. Originally built in 1213, it predates the official founding of Amsterdam by about 60 years. Originally it was a much smaller wooden chapel, but as is the case with many (if not most) older churches in Europe, it grew in size and magnificence over time.
